I’d like to live as a poor man with lots of money. ~ Pablo Picasso
I enjoy a simple life, running my modest empire from home in shorts, a t-shirt and flip-flops. No brand names, no pretense, just an honest guy making an honest living, surrounding myself with down to earth people who like to enjoy life in a fun, responsible and fair way.
I turn 40 this coming December, which is a big landmark in my life journey. It has been a great ride so far and I feel privileged to have had success in both a professional and personal capacity. I consider my greatest success to be my wife and my two children, Chloe, four years old, and Mia, two years old. They are my world, and luckily, because of my choice of profession, I get to spend lots of time with them.
So where did it all start…? Well, I went to high school in Vancouver, Canada, and then to England to study Computer Science and Business Administration, so I guess I was well placed for a career that revolved around the web. After a few years “to and fro”, I finally settle down and just as the millennium had turned and the Internet revolution was getting into full swing. I started working for a company as an Web programmer working on small web development projects.
It wasn’t long though before I made a move to independence, setting up a company called Centriz.com with my partner (Daniel Chow) at the time. We spent 2-years working on web development projects before taking a far more lucrative road into the domain name industry. Gradually we stopped all web development projects and focused on building up our domain portfolio.
Fast-forward 10 years and here I am, a full-time domainer with a mid size domain portfolio. I know, how did I acquire that many? Well, I just love domains, and if I see one I like, I just have to buy it. Quite frankly, I’m addicted to domain names; I feel excited just looking at the domain! While I do get the urge to build sites on some of the domains I own, I mostly just leave them sitting in domain parking, which generates money from advertising clicks and sales of domain names when people want to buy. Some of my most valuable domains include, Alton.com, Juicy.net, Keyboard.com, Photograph.com, Mouse.com, bomb.net and Special.org.
My job allows me to work from home, which means I am able to drive the kids to school and even help my wife around the home…(ahem). At heart I am a family man and I love to be here as much as possible. That said, being a domainer can leave an abundance of spare time, and so, where possible, to keep my entrepreneurial streak alive, I am always on the look out for new projects to get involved with.
Most recently I have been helping my father develop a cash and carry business in China (CashnCarry.cn / Fiveislands.cn.) I have been working there few times a week to get things off the ground, but if I’m honest, it’s a labor of love and I have no experience on running such business and I am simply helping out my father, and once things are running smoothly, I will leave the staff in the warehouse to take control. Besides, I am too lenient with the staff. What can I say; I don’t like shouting at people or being too much of a disciplinarian.
So that’s business, but what about the things I enjoy outside of work and family. Well, before I was married I was a keen motorcyclist, and before my daughter Chloe was born I was involved in car racing. I competed in the HKAA group N, and attended the Macua Grand Prix in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Both sports have a substantial risk element, so I am fine with giving them up to make sure I am fully fit and healthy to spend time with my kids. I do love the great outdoors though, and in 2012 I plan to learn to sail. I am also planning to start cooking more, which will no doubt please my wife.
Well, that’s my life in less than 1000 words. I hope you enjoyed reading a bit about who I am and what I do. I also hope you will follow me on this blog as I continue beyond my fortieth birthday and into the next chapter of my life. If you work in the web industry and have an idea that you think may be of interest to me, or you want to buy or sell domain names, get in touch because I would love to hear from you.
Have a great day.
